ANTHROPOCENIC MIDDEN SURVEY - PRELIMINARY REPORT
This document is a preliminary report of archaeological fieldwork conducted at the site highlighted in the preceding anthropocenic midden survey. Test excavations and then large-scale excavations of this midden were undertaken in successive projects. Intensive examination of the artifacts reveals evidence of a complex and collaborative civilization. Initial analysis was instrumental in development of methods and models for reconstructing interspecies economies, landscape history and species-environment interactions in the region. The report is intended to gather information about the culture. The majority of the materials excavated at the site are believed to have been their discarded waste.
A bipedal hominid species is the sole source of the artifacts collected at the site. The species exhibits sufficient cranial capacity for intelligence and limbs well adapted for fine coordination. Prehensile paired grasping appendages with opposable digits enabled complex coordination and dexterity. The species was an endothermic amniote displaying consistency with and variation from the other planetary life forms represented within the collection in form and content.
The species’ young required a lengthy period of parental care to reach maturity. Many artifacts discovered were purposed for the rearing and intellectual development of their young. The species placed great care and emphasis on the rearing and education of its young through a guided experiential learning process by introducing the use of tools, familiarization with the environmental and societal norms through imagination based learning processes. Indicates also a capability of abstraction and morphic* thought despite the evidence of self-destructive behavior as a civilization.
LIFE FORM ADAPTATIONS
In the collection are many miniaturized representations of the other forms of life on the planet offering information regarding the forms of life common in that time. A diverse global system of life forms adapted to myriad conditions- aquatic, aerial, land based and arboreal. The species celebrated the forms of life they lived with.
There is evidence of art and music in the culture, as well as an appreciation for the presence of organic and living forms in the planetary environment. The species is adept at decorative design and visual stimulation used as a form of visual enticement to make products appealing to encourage consumption.
The presence of numerous identical artifacts indicates widespread mass production capabilities, complex transportation systems and global cooperation. Items showing distinct modes of written communication indicate a capability for cooperative and peaceable behavior.
Majority of artifacts found in the uncovered strata were discarded or lost by members of the community inhabiting the region immediately surrounding the collection site. The artifacts were not manufactured in the immediate region. Additionally, the quantity of artifacts at the site offers information regarding population density.
The collection contained numerous protective wrappings for preserved food products. The products were generally consumed and the wrapping was discarded. It is evidenced that very little of the food consumed within the community actually originated from within the immediate region. The variety of products indicates production facilities in myriad geographic locations. Additionally, these products’ nutritional value was generally insufficient and actually detrimental to the continued health of an individual. This is indicative of a capital based system of wealth exchange and accumulation. This system encouraged the production and consumption of the products with the enticement of wealth accumulation to the producers. A variety of products present the consumer with a variety of choices in products of varying tastes etc.
The species relied on water for survival and there is evidence of a planetary environment with abundant liquid water in the form of numerous streams, lakes and oceans. In fact regular and varied precipitation conveyed the debris materials to this site. It is noted that it was a collection point for water and waste. Water is necessarily consumed by the species evidenced by numerous single use and individual water containers. In the presence of abundant water, the inhabitants consumed water from distant regions. Extensive use of imported bottled water implies the local water was unsafe to consume.
Vehicles for individualized transportation for every adult member of the community utilized extracted hydrocarbon compounds as fuel. It is likely, given estimated global population, that the result of this cumulative consumption would be significant changes to atmospheric composition, hydrological conditions and global mean temperature.
A technologically adept and generally cooperative society, however, there is evidence of conflict in numerous military representations. Armed with weaponry, miniaturized reproductions of the species engaged in armed conflict, with multiple representations of weapons and armored vehicles for military use. Species with this level of technological development combined with militarized civil conflict risk extinction.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS
The species was immersed in the opportunism and predation inherent in the survival instincts of all life forms planet wide. These traits contributed to their success in achieving this apex position in the predator prey pyramid. The success of the species originated with its ability to manipulate its environment. In the absence of a viable predator the species faced the threat of extinction through unrestricted consumption of resources and destruction of the global system of life forms necessary for survival. The uncovered strata containing the artifacts mark a period of intense accumulation. Evidencing an inefficient consumption paradigm, a consequence of rapid arrival at sentience* and transition from its earlier evolutionary antecedent state.
This rapid arrival at sentience* may explain the inefficiency of the global consumption paradigm, additionally hindered by the capital-based motivations of manufacturers of these products. Consequently limiting development of necessary empathetic* capacity to preserve the species and global infrastructure of diverse life forms essential for the species survival.
The lack of artifacts in subsequent strata at the site indicates either an end to destructive consumption practices or the extinction of the species. Continued analysis of the artifacts will yield greater clarity in understanding this species and its civilization.
